Rev. Sylvia N. Cooper began serving Shady Grove as Minister of Music and Arts in 2007. Sylvia’s desire to serve God with enthusiasm and joy is evident in her leadership with people of all ages and in her playing the piano in worship. As she ministers alongside the people of Shady Grove, Sylvia offers opportunities for members to share their talents and gifts through the encouragement and equipping of young children through Senior adults. Sylvia has directed annual Christmas cantatas and children’s musicals at Shady Grove, and has served as director of the Center’s Summer Musical Theatre Camp since 2008, helping the camp to grow from 1 week with 24 campers to 3 weeks and 137 campers each summer. Sylvia brings to us the desire to build relationships within the church as well as with the community through the ministries of music and the arts. The Golden Notes, a Senior Adult Handbell Choir, was established in 2018 to share God’s love and extend the hand of fellowship to others.
Sylvia holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from James Madison University and a Master of Divinity degree with a Church Music Concentration from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. She was ordained into Christian ministry in April 2002. Sylvia is married to Glenn Cooper, and they have three children, Andrea Raab and husband Michael, and Ryan and Jordan Bradfield.  Glenn and Sylvia are the proud grandparents of their first grandchild, Lila.

Sylvia’s favorite scriptures are Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose,” and Colossians 3:16: “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”
