As a pre-teen, Kate ran preschool summer camps for neighborhood children for whom she regularly babysat. She and her best friend created a fun backyard playground and basement classroom (fully stocked with paints, brushes, child-size scissors, glue, and plenty of construction paper). Throughout her life, Kate has taught Sunday school, led VBS, and been involved in church work surrounding children’s programming.
Although the SGUMC Camp Pray and Play preschool summer camps that Kate has directed since 2016 have become quite a bit more involved and serve a greater outreach than her backyard summer camps, they still reflect a creative passion for shining God’s light.
There is no wonder that “This Little Light of Mine” has always been one of Kate’s favorite songs. Helping children discover ways to let their lights shine is Kate’s favorite thing. Through crafts, drama, service projects, and story telling, Kate loves sharing God’s message of love with children of all ages and being part of their faith journey.
After graduating from the University of Richmond with degrees in art and sociology, her mother encouraged her to pursue her passion for art. Kate said “I just want to help people” and obtained a Masters of Social Work from VCU. With a background in social work, interior design, and tons of volunteer experience in teaching children about the love of God, Kate came to Shady Grove in 2007 as a dedicated volunteer in the children’s program. In that volunteer role as well as her role as preschool teacher, Kate has had the blessing of working with most of the SGUMC children in some capacity.
After serving as Interim in the fall of 2019, Kate welcomes the opportunity to serve full-
time as the Director of Children’s and Family Ministries at SGUMC.
Kate loves painting, the beach, and visiting with her three grown children Kyle, Troy, and Jane Claire, and her two grandchildren Fiona and Everett. As a family, they all love to play games, dance at weddings, and eat ice cream. Kate shares her home and yoga and meditation time with two big orange cats Pumpkin and Cosmo and two small white fluffy dogs Chloe and Gracie.
