Missions
Shady Grove's mission committee is working hard to do God’s work in our community as well as throughout the world. Our goal is to bring our church’s light and promise of Christ’s love to those in need. We ask that you remember that Christ teaches us to go out and be “fishers of people” as well as to care for those who find themselves in less fortunate circumstances than ourselves.
Altar Flowers Do you have a special occasion, loved one or memory of someone that you would like to honor at our Sunday service in the sanctuary? You can sponsor the altar flowers by signing up on the calendar located in the side room of the Narthex. The cost of the weekly flowers is $22.00 and Chairman Dana Kelly (364-8929) will call you about two weeks prior to your selected date to confirm and answer any questions you may have.
The church has a special arrangement with Coleman’s Florist for a reduced rate on the arrangements and we are committed to 52 arrangements each year so if we don’t have someone covering the cost – the church must pick up the cost!. So join us in sponsoring the flowers on Sunday. You can honor, memorialize, celebrate or just say thank you to someone! United Methodist Family Services
Shady Grove is involved with the UMFS through the support of an all girls cottage. These are group homes located on the campus of the UMFS at West Broad Street and Thompson Street. These residents are placed at UMFS with challenges that they face with their own families and ability to cope in today’s world. The girls range in age from 8-17 and are looking for people to care about them be role models in this peer pressure world. SGUMC has adopted Cottage #4 and provides fun activities for the girls living in the cottage as well support and needed clothes and personal items. Want to be a mentor or just work on a project? Central Virginia Food Bank Each month our congregation donates non-perishable food items to this organization that provides much needed food to local food pantry’s. Here's a list of particular items that we collect each month: JANUARY - Soup FEBRUARY - Coffee/teas
MARCH - Canned vegetables
APRIL - Pastas
MAY - Cereals
JUNE - Peanut butter
JULY - Canned fruits
AUGUST - Bottled water
SEPTEMBER - Healthy snacks
OCTOBER - Baby foods
NOVEMBER - Boxed goods
DECEMBER - All of the above!
To donate your stable goods you can drop them off in the Narthex or the Fellowship Hall in the marked boxes. Operation Worship and Gratitude
Operation Gratitude Operation Gratitude annually send 100,000+ care packages filled with snacks, entertainment items and personal letters of appreciation to US service members deployed in harm’s way. The organizations mission is to lift morale, bring a smile to a service members face and express to our Armed Forces the appreciation and support of the American People. Each package contains donated product and, we hope, a personal letter. We at Shady Grove UMC help collect items for these boxes 2 time per year - the fall for Christmas delivery and spring for early summer delivery. Additionally, we decorate and make bookmarks, cards, valentine hearts, pumpkins, New Year, Easter, Veteran’s day and Thanksgiving cards for the men and women deployed and those in Walter Reed Medical Center. Contact Lisa Jones at blessedb4@yahoo.com or 687-6554.
Operation Worship In 2008, Operation Worship took up the challenge of sending 100,000 Bibles in 100 days to our men and women in uniform. That goal was reached in just 40 days. In 2009, over 200,000 were sent by year end. In 2010, with the addition of the Homefront edition for the heroes at home, nearly 400,000 were sent. These are small pocket sized bibles that are purchased for $5.00 each. There is one for each branch of the service and one for the heroes at home called The Homefront. There is a place in the front for a personal message of hope. These are sold and written in by the person making the purchase or given to the youth to write in. Once a case is completed, we merely call and they are sent out for distribution to the chaplains. Contact Lisa Jones at blessedb4@yahoo.com or 687-6554 to learn more about this project.
Baby Steps Baby Steps was founded by members of Shady Grove United Methodist Church-Short Pump. We seek to support mothers, fathers, and children in the Richmond area experiencing difficult or crisis pregnancies, life during/after the NICU, or infant loss. By supporting the March of Dimes and by partnering with Full Circle Grief Center and Young Lives, we seek to offer love, support, encouragement, and hope. Whether families are dealing with a challenging pregnancy, preparing to leave the NICU, or coping with the devastating loss of a child, each day is a tiny baby step. We are there to walk with Richmond families and support them every step of the way. Click here to go to the Baby Steps homepage. Contact Meghan Sheriff at msher17@yahoo.com or 308-8523.
CARITAS (Congregations Around Richmond Involved to Assure Shelter) For those living on the streets, CARITAS is a haven of safety. Each week, different churches throughout the Richmond area open their doors to up to 40 individuals or families who are experiencing a housing crisis. The guests stay with each church site for one week with the hosting church providing meals, showers, laundry services and a safe and warm sleeping environment. This is a major project of a church of any size. Shady Grove has been involved with CARITAS since 2002 with the help of hundreds of members. How can you help? Provide one of the many needed items for the week: help in the kitchen, transport the guests to the showers or to the laundry facilities, provide books, magazines, movies for the guests to watch. There is an array of needs that need to be filled during the weeks that we host CARITAS. To find out how you can help, contact Melba Gibbs at mgibbs@freedomhouserichmond.org. Shady Grove will be hosting a group of single women April 14-20, 2012.
Shalom Farms Come Dig in the Dirt! Shalom Farms is a regional food security, community development project of United Methodist Urban Ministries of Richmond (UMUMR). And Shalom Farms is a non-profit community farm project with the goal of helping low income inner city neighborhoods in Richmond with food security. The Missions Committee is pleased to announce that SGUMC will have opportunities for groups to go to the Farm the third Sunday of each month. If you or a group is interested in setting up a third Sunday, please contact Sandi Shriner at sdollar123@yahoo.com or 364-3868. TLC (The Lord's CareTakers)
This is a grassroots "inner-net" initiative to fix up, clean up and give some much needed TLC to our church facilities - as well as bring our Shady Grove members and our precious visitors closer together. The work and planning that is required for this to be successful promises to be fun, with food and fellowship like you've never experienced! Guaranteed! And there will be an abundance of opportunities to give back and to help restore some areas of our church home. Together, with the grace and blessings from God for God's House, we can accomplish what He has placed before us. No matter what age, physical abilities and strengths, large or small physic, personal vision and talents - there is something that every member can contribute. I look forward to each of us discovering our special gifts and spiritual commitments! Cindy McNamara, thetlcproject@yahoo.com
Youth Mission Trips and Activities Mission opportunities are a vital part of the Shady Grove UMC Youth Ministry. The largest part of our missions are our summer mission trips. This year there will be three separate mission trips with over 100 youth. The middle schoolers will be going to Raleigh, NC from July 20-27, 2012. The 9th-11th graders will be going to Raleigh County in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia from July 7-14, 2012. Our high school seniors will be going to Philadelphia, PA from June 30-July 7, 2012. Past events have been packaging meals for Stop Hunger Now, providing items for homeless shelters, and participating in the Young Einstein Tutoring Program and many other community outreach activities. Contact Frank Basil at youth@shadygroveumc.net to get involved or check out the Youth website page https://sites.google.com/a/shadygroveumc.net/youth/
Rowdy Moms The Rowdy Moms' group is comprised of mothers with children ages newborn-teen. We are not only a support system to one another, but we extend our hearts, minds and creative energy to the community at large.
Mission Friends This group is for kindergarten, first and second graders AND their parents. Mission Friends will typically meet the First and Third Sundays of each month. We will be involved in hands-on missions.
Mission Friends will begin after Praise Kids on Sunday evenings and will run the same time as G-3, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. in room 204 of the educational building.
Parents and their children will be working side by side in missions. Isn't this a great opportunity for you to serve the Lord together?
